What Is Individual and Family Therapy?
Individual therapy and family therapy are generally short-term psychotherapy treatments that often take a behavior-based approach. While fundamentally different in terms of the clinical setting, both individual and family therapy may combine talk therapy, counseling, and cognitive behavioral therapy, and might be intertwined in some cases. Individual therapy focuses on a person's emotional, behavioral, and mental health concerns while family therapy is geared toward understanding how the familial unit impacts each individual. What Does Individual and Family Therapy Involve?
Treatment sessions for individual and family therapy at Pittman Psychiatry & Recovery may be recommended for patients and families impacted by various types of addiction, abuse, trauma, grief, or other issues. During these visits, our providers will work to help you understand how these disorders affect a person individually and other members of the family.
- Individual therapy involves one-on-one treatment sessions that focus on identifying causative factors of emotional, psychological, social, and behavioral actions. Treatment may also address mental health issues that lead to negative thought patterns and destructive behavior. The goal of individual therapy is to change how patients react to negative stimuli in their life and adopt coping mechanisms to improve their well-being and overall quality of life.
- Family therapy is a form of group therapy where all or multiple members of the family work to understand the emotional, psychological, social, and behavioral actions of their loved ones. During the therapeutic process, our providers may meet with family members individually and as a group to help improve communication, work through issues, and bring harmony to family life and these interpersonal relationships.
